Good or bad ingredients

Sulfates, silicones, parabens … which princess still keeps track of all the ingredients that should not be included in cosmetics?

For us honesty and naturalness are the most important values behind which we stand with all our products from myRapunzel to 100%. Our ingredients come from a small farm in Austria, which are organically grown and processed there. They are thus completely free of any chemistry.

That’s why we want to share with you an overview of all harmful ingredients. So you can see harmful ingredients at a glance and avoid so that your hair can be around healthy and happy.

parabens

Parabens are usually used as a preservative to prevent that the cosmetics, including hair care, are attacked by germs. Parabens make hair care products last longer. The danger, however, is that parabens can affect the hormonal system, thus harming our health. Fortunately, there are natural preservatives that allow for myRapunzel to completely eliminate parabens.

You easily recognize parabens because they always end in “-paraben”. Some examples are the following:

Methylparaben, propylparaben or ethylparaben.

silicones

Silicones are synthetic substances that envelop the hair with a plastic film. Although they ensure that the hair looks shiny and supple, but they do not penetrate any moisture and nutrients in the individual hair strands. This eventually causes hair to break off much faster and barely grow, as they do not get the necessary vitamins. In addition, silicones are also harmful to the environment because they are not biodegradable.

At myRapunzel, we rely on the power of natural ingredients and completely dispense with silicones.

Whether silicones are contained in a product is recognized by the ingredients with the following endings: “-cone”, “-col”, “-conol”, or “-xane”, thus e.g. Amodimethicone or Cetyl Dimethicone.

Sulfate

Sulfates are salts that are obtained from sulfuric acid and clean and foam well. Although they can remove any dirt, they are so aggressive that the sulphate damages the protective lipid layer. As a result, the skin and hair become very dry over time. On the list of ingredients they are usually recognized as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Pareth Sulfate (SPS).

By the way: Again, we are incredibly proud that our products contain no sulfates.

mineral oils

Mineral oils are used as a substitute for high quality vegetable oils. They are derived from petroleum and enclose the hair like silicones and are difficult to wash out. The problem with these mineral oils is that they are suspected of causing cancer. Mineral oils, Petrolatum, Paraffinum Liquidum, Paraffin Subliquidum, Cera Microcristallina, Microcrystalline Wax, Ozokerite, Ceresin, Vaseline.

emulsifiers

So that water and oils in cosmetics enter into a permanent bond, emulsifiers are added. They belong to the excipients and combine immiscible ingredients. Among the most popular emulsifiers are the polyethylene glycols (PEGs), which are suspected of endangering the natural barrier function of the skin. In this case, the skin is no longer protected and becomes more permeable to pollutants and environmental toxins.
